General

  • Mission:
  • CircEsteem's mission is to unite youth from diverse racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds and help them build self-esteem and mutual respect through the practice of circus arts.

  • Overview:
  • CircEsteem works with more than 200 children each week to teach personal development skills, such as self esteem, team work and learning skills through the training of circus arts. Since 2001, CircEsteem has worked with thousands of children across Chicago, helping them navigate, with strength, peace and equality, a polarized and racially charged society.

Through CircEsteem's three main program streams, the organization works to bring youth together for common goals of community success and support, to set and reach personal goals and to respect and care for their own and their peers bodies and minds.

CircEsteem's flagship program is called HomeWork CircusWork, which offers educational support for children and young adults through focused and routine tutoring, supporting their personal development through circus training, all while immersing them in a multicultural environment where children are treated equally with no regard to their race, religion or economic capacity.

Additionally, CircEsteem offers programs for children to enhance their circus skills, while also increasing their self-esteem and ability to focus. This performance focused program has three levels, starting from beginners who chose circus as a recreational activity, through teenagers who commit to training 11 hours of circus training each week. The young adult on the advanced performance troupe often have the opportunity to perform in and around Chicago at private and public events. Some of these students even go on to university to study circus and become international circus performers!

Lastly, CircEsteem believes that the arts should be accessible to all children, no matter the neighborhood they live in or their family's economic capacity. The Arts Accessibility program brings circus to schools across Chicago as in-school residencies and after-school activities, in an effort to offer the valuable experience and benefits that learning art as a child presents.

All of CircEsteem's programs are developed to offer support in a variety of areas relating to childhood development, educational support and mutual respect for all people.

  • History:
  • CircEsteem was founded in 2001 by an ex-clown from Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus. The organization began as a small after school activity offered at a neighborhood youth and family services institution, and has grown substantially since then. CircEsteem currently offers programming six days a week for hundreds of children of varying racial, economic and cultural backgrounds. CircEsteem has also helped its students receive over $600,000 in scholarships for universities across the country.
