  • Mission:
  • To ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

  • Overview:
  • Approximately 32,510 individuals will receive a cancer diagnosis in Arizona in 2016. The Institute of Medicine states it is impossible to deliver quality cancer care without addressing psychosocial needs. Internationally recognized and evidence based, CSCAZ uses the Patient Active ConceptĀ® model, so that people affected by cancer can learn vital skills to regain control, reduce feelings of isolation and restore hope. Research indicates this approach reduces pain and trauma symptoms, improves coping and immune response, and may increase the potential of long-term survival. CSCAZ serves individuals of all ages and with all types of cancer, as well as those with cancer-related disabilities.

CSCAZ provides a full range of programs in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area to help families navigate diagnosis, treatment, post treatment, long-term survivorship, end of life and bereavement. Our programs include Support Services, Education, Healthy Lifestyle Activities, Social Connections and Resources & Referral. We offer support groups for families, teens, caregivers, and Spanish language groups; educational workshops; nutrition and exercise classes; stress management sessions; expressive arts/music programs; and social gatherings. In 2015, CSCAZ served 1,033 individuals through 11,249 program visits.

  • History:
  • The Cancer Support Community was originally founded in 1982 by Harold Benjamin, PhD in California as The Wellness Community. Harold's wife had been diagnosed with breast cancer and upon completion of her treatment, he identified the need for supportive services for cancer care that did not exist in the community. In 1998, our Arizona chapter of The Wellness Community was established with supportive programs beginning in March of 1999. In 2009, The Wellness Community merged with another organization called Gilda's Clubs and formed what is now the Cancer Support Community.

Central to the mission is a homelike, nurturing environment that enhances the atmosphere of healing and support. The place is a historic bungalow built in 1908 on Palm Lane in downtown Phoenix. The house is named in honor of Ina Levine, a woman who embodied both the need for compassion and caring for others and the ability to have strength in the face of cancer. The charming home is the foundation of a nurturing environment away from, and unlike that of the hospital, medical offices and clinics we traditionally associate with treating cancer.
