  • Mission:
  • As Canada’s leading child and youth mentoring charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters facilitates life-changing mentoring relationships that inspire and empower children and youth to reach their potential. Studies show mentoring helps kids stay in school, avoid risky behavior such as bullying, and grow up more connected with family, peers and community. Helping children reach their full potential can lead to positive community outcomes like a reduction in poverty and unemployment, safer schools and neighbourhoods, and a new generation of civic-minded adults. Serving as role models, our mentors teach by example the importance of giving and giving back, staying in school, and having respect for family, peers and community. Each time we pair a child with a mentor or introduce a group of students to an in-school program, we start something incredible – a life-changing relationship built on friendship, trust and empowerment.

  • Overview:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax has a variety of programs designed to effectively serve children in mentoring relationships.

Big Little Match: We match a Big Brother or Big Sister with a child, taking care to ensure they have similar interests. Matches spend one-to-one time together developing a meaningful friendship.

Big Couple - This program is similar to the Big Little Match, but in this case, a couple can volunteer together. It's a great way for two people to share a special relationship with a child.

In-School Mentoring - This is a program that takes place at the child's school, during the school year. The Big spends one hour per week doing a fun activity or talking with a child who could use a friend.

BigBunch - This school-based program matches elementary school students with high school students, under the guidance of adult mentors and facilitated by a professional mentoring coordinator. Students participate in group activities throughout the school year. Younger students gain valuable social interaction and high school students learn leadership skills.

Go Girls! - "Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds" is the slogan for this program that encourages girls to embrace a healthy lifestyle. Over the course of eight weekly sessions, girls gain confidence and learn to develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

Game On! - Developed for adolescent boys, this program uses a mentoring approach to teach boys how to "eat Smart - Play Smart - Live Smart" in eight weekly sessions.

Big Outdoors - This program is designed to get kids outside and interacting with nature. Along with volunteer mentors, young people get a chance to explore wilderness areas while taking part in physical activity within a group setting. Nature has an amazing ability to allow kids to be kids, and be aware of the world around them.

  • History:
  • For one hundred years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been making a positive difference in the lives of our nation’s youth by developing and implementing a wide range of mentoring programs. One-to-one and group programs, for both in school and outside of school.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax has been creating friendships since 1967. We started out matching Big Brothers with Little Brothers and have grown to include a variety of different programs that serve both boys and girls. We are proud of our achievements and continue to strive to be on the leading edge of the Big Brothers Big Sisters movement in Canada.
