General

  • Mission:
  • We are an amateur sports organization, promoting the newest Olympic sport, BMX (Bicycle Motocross), to all interested participants. We have made it our goal to provide a suitable facility and program which will enrich our community. ABMX is not restricted to only those in our community, however, due to the distance of facilities of this type, we saw the necessity of a track in our area.
    Our Mission Statement is as follows;
    "To provide an exciting, challenging, recreational opportunity for the community, in which friendship, camaraderie, competition, sportsmanship, personal responsibility and strong family values are nurtured."

  • History:
  • In 2003, we began entertaining the idea of establishing a BMX track in Atascadero, CA, central to the majority of the bicycle motocross riders in our area. We were utilizing a track existing on private property. The land owners had preliminary plans for developing their property, which would exclude us from being able to use the land after 2004. A large group of riders have continued to participate in BMX by traveling to sanctioned tracks in California, some have continued on to the Regional and National levels of competition. We have formed a family-like bond with many of the people involved. Since travel is not a feasible manner of regular participation for the larger population of realized, and potential riders, we became committed to establishing a local track. We began our seach for suitable land. Without funds, we were limited to the possibilities which local businesses, organizations or the City of Atascadero could offer. Our local Water Company agreed to meet with us on a section of land adjacent to their field office, near the local riverbed. We agreed that this land was physically adaptable. The next step was to approach the City to investigate allowed usage for the land. As the section was designated "Industrial Use", we were told of the procedure we would need to go through in order to either re-zone or apply for a Conditional Use Permit. The City lawyer made it clear that the land would not be re-zonable. We began the process which would approve the Conditional Use Permit. We kept ourselves open to other site possibilities. A few opportunities did arise, but they were not appropriate for our need. The process through the City began with the Community Services Dept., progressed to the arks and Recreation Dept., then to the Planning Dept., and finally to the City Council for final approval to procee with the C.U.Permit. This put us into the year 2005, at which time I believed we might actually be able to build the track, so I began organizing our group in order to form a Corporation. By Sept. 2005 we were filed as a Non-Profit Corporation with the State of California, after which I began reseaching the process of establishing tax exemption with both the IRS and the State of Caifornia. Limited on funds, I chose to do this myself, instead of paying an agency to do it for us. All the while, the intake meetings and planning with the City continued. We finally received approval to begin the project from the City Council. In September of 2008 we received our positive Letter of Determination from the IRS, confirming our status as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, including the qualification to receive donations under section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi), 2055, 2106 and/or 2522 of the Internal Revenue Code. We have been determined to be classified as a public charity. We are now into 2009 and we are anxious to begin construction. We are in great need of funding for this to occur. We participate in smaller local events, with concessions at parades, car washes, and even a Bike-a-Thon which has allowed us to pay for the City, State & Federal fees we have incurred so far. There will be additional fees as building begins and progresses, as well as 6' vinyl-clad fencing (req'd by City), gates for the fence, grading equipment rental, establishment of power and water, plumbing, required landscaping per City conditions, materials for the construction of 3 buildings (a 20' x 24' registration/concession building, a gazebo-style announcer's tower and a utility shed), portable restrooms, including 1 handicapped restroom, concrete for the starting-gate and the (3)handicap parking stall's slab, an asphalt approach at the street, erosion control material, track maintenance equipment (minor & major), office equipment, concession equipment, audio equipment, parking lot material (decomposed granite), parking stall stoppers, signage, etc. Labor will be volunteer based, however we may be required to hire a Contractor and/or Architect for field verifications. Funds are the only thing standing in our way at this time.
