  • Mission:
  • Camp Starfish was founded in 1998 as an independent non-profit organization for at-risk children with special needs with a mission “to foster the success and growth of children with emotional, behavioral and learning problems by providing individualized attention as part of structured, nurturing and fun programs”. One hundred percent of the children who attend Camp Starfish programs are in need of significant, meaningful, safe and nurturing inclusion in a program specifically geared towards his or her individualized special needs.

Each of Camp Starfish’s staff members participates actively in trainings, discussion groups and professional development opportunities which strengthen our ability to provide exceptional services to children with emotional and behavioral disabilities. At the top of our priority list during staff training is to work with each staff member to help them actively engage and support inclusion of all campers in their cabin and activity group.

The Camp Starfish Board members each joined the organization because they believe in the mission of providing individualized programs for children with disabilities. Additional opportunities for learning and educating our board are discussed at Board meetings, at our Board retreat, and during visits to the camp.

  • History:
  • Camp Starfish first opened its doors to 120 campers on a leased site on Cape Cod in 2000. After occupying rented facilities for years, in 2008 Starfish became the proud owners of a 40-acre lakefront property in Rindge, New Hampshire.

Camp Starfish is a unique summer camp where children find success, friendship, and safety, sometimes for the first time. The only New England camp to offer a one-to-one camper-to-counselor ratio, Starfish serves children from ages 7 to 15 who struggle with serious emotional, behavioral and learning problems. Offering highly individualized attention and support, the camp is a refuge for youngsters with few if any other options, a chance to fit in, and a place for them to experience summer as it should be, filled with fun, friendship, and challenges, along with opportunities to learn and grow. It is a testament to the unique service provided by Starfish that our camp not only faces long waiting lists year after year, but also enjoys one of the highest camper return rates among at-risk population camps in New England.

The Camp Starfish philosophy, which provides 1:1 support for campers, is based on engaging campers in a variety of well-structured traditional summer camp activities in a safe and predictable environment. Every activity at Starfish is specifically geared to meet the needs and abilities of each bunk, activity group, and child. Activities are well-structured and guided by a thoughtfully designed curriculum. Staff consistently seek innumerable ways to provide campers with positive reinforcement while helping them to recognize and articulate their strengths. Structure is something used a lot at Camp Starfish, because children thrive on it. They need routines to help them feel safe in a stable and predictable environment. Plus, campers learn through repetition. When the campers know what to expect, then they know what to do, and then they can do the right thing and enjoy success. While campers feel supported and comforted by the structure, it is very intentionally integrated into the program such that camp still feels very much like "camp."

Currently, Camp Starfish holds three sessions of overnight camp each summer, run on the same property as our day camp, which operates with five one week sessions. In 2009, Starfish began the Weekenders Program, which provides weekend respite “mini-camps” for children who have attended at least one session of Starfish overnight camp. These weekends are already proving immensely popular and typically fill within 48 hours of announcement. Both overnight and day camps regularly have lengthy waitlists by mid-spring.
