  • Mission:
  • To promote better marriages by providing enrichment opportunities and resources to strengthen couple relationships, increase intimacy, and enhance personal growth, mutual fulfillment, and family wellness.

  • Overview:
  • Better Marriages was founded in 1973 as Association for Couples in Marriage Enrichment (ACME) by Drs. David and Vera Mace. We are a nonprofit and non-sectarian organization. For 43 years our mission has been to help couples build strong, healthy relationships.

Better Marriages provides resources for pre-married couples, long-time married couples, and all couples in between. Better Marriages is for all couples, regardless of their age or stage of relationship. We serve:
    • Couples who want to learn skills and participate in activities that help them increase their marital intimacy and mutual understanding
    • Couples committed to the present and future growth of their relationship and their family
    • Couples interested in promoting healthy family relationships in their community
    • Organizations providing relationship education and enrichment programs for couples and families
    • Therapists, counselors, relationship coaches who provide services or support to couples

    We fulfill our mission by:
    • Training and certifying couples to lead marriage education and enrichment classes, retreats and events
    • Developing resources such as books, webinars, and videos on relationship topics to support couples
    • Providing ongoing opportunities for marriage education and enrichment – such as Marriage Enrichment Groups, conferences, classes and retreats

Better Marriages has an international presence, with members in 11 countries. We're organized into local, state and regional chapters where our primary work takes place. Each chapter oversees the programs and events offered in their local area.

As a grassroots, volunteer organization, programs and events offered under the umbrella of Better Marriages are as varied as the couples leading them. What these programs and events share in common is that they are couple-led and use marriage enrichment principles taught through Couple Leadership Training. Better Marriages empowers trained and certified Leader Couples to lead programs and events offered through community agencies, federal grant recipients, and faith-based settings.

  • History:
  • In 1973, "marriage enrichment" was non-existent. Drs. David and Vera Mace, a married couple involved as marriage and family therapists, coined the phase and founded Association for Couples in Marriage Enrichment (ACME) as a pioneer organization in the field. Since that time, the non-profit has re-branded itself and is doing business as Better Marriages, a more accurately descriptive name. Today the marriage movement includes hundreds of organizations - but ACME remains the original.
