General

  • Mission:
  • Can Do MS is an innovative provider of lifestyle empowerment programs for people with MS and their support partners who want to move beyond the challenges and limitations of MS and improve their quality of life. Our philosophy is rooted in a uniquely empowering whole person, whole health, whole community approach to maximizing health and living with MS. We enhance and complement traditional models of care by focusing on the physical, interpersonal, emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects of living with MS. This embodies founder, Jimmie Heuga’s, positive can do philosophy and perspective. Jimmie was a 1964 Olympic skier diagnosed with MS in 1970. His mind, body and wellness-based approach to managing and enhancing life with MS changed the way the MS field viewed and treated the disease.

Mission and Vision - Can Do MS leads the way with comprehensive programs that empower people and families living with MS to transform and improve their quality of life. We envision a world in which every person impacted by MS maximizes their potential, improving their quality of life.

  • Overview:
  • Organizational Goals for 2015:

    * To continue to provide a comprehensive program of lifestyle empowerment programs across the US for patients with MS and their support partners.
    * To continue to provide these programs free of charge to all participants.
    * Deliver local and national events to raise awareness of MS and our can do philosophy
    * Develop adaptive programs that provide those with MS with the equipment, tools and private instruction to participate in the sports and activities they love
    * 10,000 people will participate in, or benefit from, our programs, events and services.

Can Do MS provides programs and services to over 10,000 people every year, helping them shift their focus away from their MS and onto what they can do. We are the only organization recognizing the special role of support partners, with program aspects specifically tailored to their needs and well-being. In addition to JUMPSTART, our programs include:

    * CAN DO, our four-day flagship program, equips individuals with the expanded knowledge, skills, awareness and confidence to become active co-managers of their health through individualized experiential learning, workshops and group therapies.
    * TAKE CHARGE, a new two-day, weekend wellness program which incorporates educational sessions, workshops and experiential activities led by a team of 5 medical professionals with group sessions and peer networking and support.
    * Can Do MS Webinar Series is an informative and accessible program for people living with MS; offered monthly (and then archived on our website), each webinar is led by MS experts representing different medical disciplines. Webinar topics vary but respond to our MS constituency’s areas of interest.
    * Ask the Can Do Team, an online Q&A which provides people living with MS the opportunity to ask our team of Program Consultants questions on any issue relating to MS. On average, 4.6 questions are asked per month. Each question is answered by 2-3 MS experts of varying medical disciplines.
    * Public education, support and technical expertise to individuals, groups and MS care providers interested in issues surrounding MS and chronic disease.

  • History:
  • Since 1984, Can Do MS, formerly The Jimmie Heuga Center for Multiple Sclerosis, has been at the forefront of promoting the culture and belief that everyone living with MS has the power to live full lives. Our organization honors the legacy and beliefs of founder Jimmie Heuga, a pioneer in the MS care management field who was diagnosed with MS in 1970. At the time of his diagnosis, and in line with conventional medical wisdom of the time, Jimmie was advised to avoid physical activity to manage his condition and preserve his health. Being the high-caliber athlete and rebelling against his prescribed sedentary lifestyle, Jimmie began developing his own program of exercise, nutrition and mental motivation to improve his physical condition and outlook on life with MS.

As Jimmie’s condition improved, he not only realized the power of exercise, nutrition, positive thinking and movement to enhance his life with MS, more importantly, he realized that by focusing on what he could do rather than what he could not, he was able to go beyond perceived limitations to live his best life with MS. Jimmie’s mind, body and wellness-based approach to managing and enhancing life with MS changed the way the MS field viewed and treated MS. Today, as researchers continue to seek a cure for MS, Can Do MS’s interdisciplinary approach continues to fill a unique gap in the continuum of MS care management.
