General

  • Mission:
  • Create healing experiences for pediatric burn survivors 8-18 to support them in the healing process from victim to survivor through use of challenging activities in novel environments. Supported by a medical team trained in pediatric burn care, all campers fully participate in all activities regardless of their injuries. During this process, the campers re-lay traumatic pathways and discover that anything is possible. These experiences will be overhead at no cost to the families.

  • Overview:
  • For the last 35 years, Children’s Hospital Colorado Burn Camp has been providing an opportunity for young burn survivors to connect with other survivors in a supported environment where they are encouraged to challenge themselves and create a full life. Through partnerships with 9 hospitals nationwide, we connect survivors within a camp setting. Our intentional and individualized programming is created to address each child’s goals while working collaboratively with families and referring burn units. We tailor a growth plan to the individual’s needs. We focus on social skill development, body image, challenging negative and limiting beliefs, appropriate risk-taking, overcoming challenges in a supportive community. Through guided reflection, campers translate these experiences into life-long skills. The lessons learned at camp are unique and build lifelong bridges to future successes.

  • History:
  • In 1983, Marion Doctor, a Social Worker from Children’s Hospital Colorado, had a vision to create a place where pediatric burn survivors could come together and continue to heal. Marion dedicated her life to healing the pain and isolation of a burn injury through community and love.
She didn’t have any examples. Programs like this didn’t exist. She had a dream. She found people who believed in her dream. And she started the first residential burn camp in the United States.

What started as a program for 20 or so kiddos now supports 128 participants a year and has impacted thousands of lives. This program was the foundational model that many other programs around the country and around the world used to build their own programs.

Each evening at camp - since the beginning - since Marion and Don and Carole Cheley built the dream of a camp for burn survivors - we have been gathering as a community to sing the friendship song arm-in-arm to end our day. The circle connects all who have come before and all who will join us in the future.
Kids will continue to have burn injuries and because of Marion's passion and dedication to serve this population, there is a place of hope where kids will always be welcome to join together and heal together.
