  • Mission:
  • The mission of Baraboo River Equine-Assisted Therapies, Inc., (BREATHE) is to provide equine-assisted activities and therapies to children and adults with disabilities and special needs, while supporting the physical, mental, and emotional health of each individual in their interaction with horses and staff.

  • Overview:
  • BREATHE provides a form of recreational and therapeutic activity on horseback to children and adults with disabilities and special needs. Students include teens ages 13-18 with a variety of life challenges ranging in severity from mental, emotional or cognitive disabilities to physical handicaps. Additionally, BREATHE provides volunteer opportunities for adults and teens ages 14 and up. Our volunteers benefit by learning about horses and their care and handling, assisting our riders with various needs throughout their lessons, and performing work around the barn and in the office depending on where their interests and abilities lead them.
Positive outcomes from therapeutic riding include improved physical mobility and coordination, increased attention span, and improved listening, concentration, and communication skills. Students gain strength, stamina, and confidence in their abilities in and out of the saddle.
Positive outcomes from volunteering are a sense of belonging and purpose gained by seeing work efforts helping others. BREATHE provides a structured, safe place to learn, not just about the horses, but also about the challenges faced by handicapped individuals and how to interact with them in a positive way. Volunteering opens doors to careers in education, the medical field, animal husbandry, administration, and management.
BREATHE is a member center of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Int'l., (PATH). PATH sets standards for therapeutic riding throughout the world. All riding sessions are given by a PATH-Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor.

  • History:
  • In 2015, the feasibility of operating an equine-assisted therapy center in the Baraboo area was studied. A professionally certified, accredited equine-assisted activity center was not available within 50 miles of Baraboo. Local human service organizations, schools, and clinical organizations presented positive feedback regarding utilization of a therapeutic riding center for client purposes.
In early 2016, the University of Wisconsin Law School selected the concept and business plan for BREATHE, through a competitive process, to participate in its Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic, which provided senior Law students the opportunity for real experience. The Clinic provided BREATHE with the legal guidance necessary to successfully apply for and receive non-profit, 501(c)(3) status with both the State of Wisconsin and the Internal Revenue Service.
Incorporation papers for BREATHE were filed with the State of Wisconsin in June, 2016 by Edward and Christine Singer. Ms. Singer is a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International (PATH). BREATHE is located just outside of Baraboo, in Sauk County, Wisconsin. Our Conditional Use Permit was approved by Sauk County on March 28, 2016, which gives us permission to expand our services and construct a new facility on our existing grounds. We are currently preparing building and grounds, obtaining equipment, and recruiting additional volunteers for our program. We have an active website and social media presence. We have a waiting list of clients who will be able to benefit from therapeutic riding when our new facilities are ready.
