  • Mission:
  • The Borealis Centre’s overarching goal is to provide systemic support in the area of markets research and investigation to the environmental and social justice movements worldwide, through this adding significant value to the growing trend towards sophisticated global markets campaigning, and adding concretely to moves towards creating truly sustainable systems of production and consumption. In complement, Borealis Centre aims to build markets research capacity within the broader NGO community, over time significantly increasing the number of experienced researchers within this field, as well as the (oftentimes expensive) data available for analysis, such as customs data.

  • History:
  • The Borealis Centre was founded in 2004 by a group of senior campaigners and markets campaign researchers in four countries, to help resolve the growing need for high-quality research to drive increasingly sophisticated markets campaigns. Since then, the Borealis Centre has been on the cutting edge of providing systemic support to the wider environmental movement in the form of sophisticated markets investigations, ultimately aimed at securing the protection of key wilderness areas around the world. Initial focus has been on helping facilitate the conservation of the world’s remaining intact ancient forest systems and the wealth of biodiversity and ecological services that these forests support, from the southeastern United States to Canada, Brazil, Chile, Honduras, Indonesia and Russia to name just a few countries.

In addition, the Borealis Centre has extensive chain-of-custody and investigative research experience in other areas, most notably climate change, fisheries, agriculture/biofuels and toxic waste trade.

Collaboration is fundamental to the success of modern-day campaigns, which is why the Borealis Centre has adopted an NGO member-based model. Today, Borealis’ core member groups include ForestEthics, Greenpeace, Dogwood Alliance, Rainforest Action Network, Urgewald and Living Oceans Society. Memberships pending in 2009 include NRDC, Markets Initiative, and Environmental Investigation Agency. We also work closely with the Environmental Paper Network. Additional key partners and fee-for-service clients have included the World Wildlife Fund, Green Press Initiative, Center for International Policy, and many others.
