General

  • Mission:
  • The Office of Family and Student Engagement will define, organize and facilitate the work of engaging families and students in support of high standards and quality education for all BPS students. We will build relationships that will bridge the gaps between the culture of school and home to establish strong, productive partnerships between home, school and community in support of student learning.” – OFSE Mission Statement

  • History:
  • Since its inception in 2001, the Boston Public Schools’ Office of Family and Student Engagement has led the district efforts to engage BPS families in the education of their children. The departments original name and focus was on Family and Community Engagement. This past year the departments work expanded to include student engagement. The Student Engagement work was originally housed out of the High School Department and made great strides in their work within that structure.

The evolving nature of the work of engaging families and students has proven to be a challenge for many within the district. While family engagement has been totally embraced in theory, the authentic engagement of families at the district level and at schools remains inconsistent.

Student engagement on the other hand continues to grow. While some schools have taken ownership of the work others are still dragging their feet. The Boston Student Advisory council has paved the way for the work through example. A crucial component of this work, they continue to impact district-wide policies and make sure they are at the table both at school based and district-wide decisions.

    OVERARCHING GOALS:
To build the capacity of schools to authentically engage families, students and the community in ways that build trust and positively impact student learning and school improvement.
To build the capacity of families to be actively engaged as partners, empowered to advocate and support student learning and school improvement.
To build the capacity of students to become fully engaged in their own learning and empowered to participate in school improvement.
To build the capacity of the district to promote family engagement as a key strategy for strengthening student learning and school improvement by supporting the development of an infrastructure to monitor and assess progress and practice.
