General

  • Mission:
  • The CBC's mission is to provide families in South Florida loving support in a safe place where children, teens and their families grieving a death can share their experiences as they move through the healing process.

  • History:
  • The CBC was founded to address the needs of the twenty-five percent of all children who experience the death of a significant loved one by the time that they graduate high school. For one in five children, this loss represents the death of a parent. Parental death has a profound impact often contributing to various emotional, physical and behavioral disturbances. Eighty-five percent exhibit symptoms such as physical complaints, sleep disturbances, and nightmares, suicidal thoughts, drug and alcohol abuse, social isolation or strained peer interaction and school difficulties. After a year severe aggressive behaviors may fade but other problems such as anxiety, loneliness and lack of confidence are likely to continue.
Founded in 1999 by psychologists, and Miami-Dade residents, Drs. Carol Berns and Mindy Cassel. In developing its core programs, the CBC first created a research-based, “Healthful Grieving Model” which promotes four principles: 1) Grieving is a normal, natural and individualized process. 2) People have the ability to heal from their loss in their own unique way, and at their own pace. 3) The process of healing is greatly enhanced in a caring, accepting environment. 4) The camaraderie between grieving children is a vital component to their healing.
When the CBC opened its doors in 1999, it began with 8 children from 5 families. It now serves more than 350 children and their families every month. This request is for funds for layout, design and printing of monographs that address a variety of topics related to grief. The CBC is about to replicate its highly successful model in collaboration with a national hospice and will need new materials to open the program for more children and their families.
