  • Mission:
  • Action Network is a Family Resource Center and CommUNITY Collaborative with a mission to build a thriving, healthy commUNITY by nurturing people, networking organizations, and taking action to secure local services for the Redwood Coast.

We define the Redwood Coast as the bi-county region of coastal and ridge communities spanning Sonoma and Mendocino Counties, from Fort Ross to Elk, California.

Our vision is caring people nurturing one another across ages and cultures in a peaceful, healthy, drug-free commUNITY. Action Network’s passion is to empower people to help themselves and others. We believe in building upon strengths through prevention programs.

  • History:
  • Action Network began in 1997 as a grass roots community-based collaborative working toward helping the Redwood Coast residents determine their own future. The Redwood Coast, a coastal region which includes portions of Mendocino and Sonoma counties in northern California, is a rural area bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and isolated from inland county services by a coastal mountain range.

Action Network, as a community collaborative, has grown significantly since its inception in 1997. It has established high profile name recognition and “can do” presence in the region through its successful implementation of numerous grant funded projects that consolidate and build the community’s capacity to improve community health.

A four-year grant from The California Endowment, along with a planning grant from California’s Healthy Start, initiated a period of community assessment and organizational capacity building leading to AN becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2002. Also in 2002, Action Network received funding as a Family Resource Center in Gualala, CA. Subsequently, the collaborative began focusing on substance abuse prevention.

Action Network’s “Across Ages and Cultures” Coalition, is a comprehensive approach to preventing substance abuse and family violence. Based on a nationally recognized curriculum, “Across Ages”, it includes six program areas: Community Service (volunteerism); Family and Youth Activities; Family Resource Center Support Services; Life Skills and Job Training; Mentoring and Nutrition and Exercise Programs.

In 2005, Action Network’s Across Ages and Cultures Coalition became a SAMHSA Drug-Free Community Support Program grantee. This funding provides the foundation for a five-year plan focusing on substance abuse prevention through 2010 with the opportunity for a second five year grant through 2015. This funding is designated primarily to develop the coalition rather than support direct services.

In 2008, the Point Arena Schools District, with Action Network as their community-based organization partner, was awarded a California Department of Education School Community Violence Prevention grant for a five year period ending in 2014.

Action Network is the only community-based collaborative on the Redwood Coast which brings together healthcare providers, schools, non-profit resource services, and others to identify and address the multiple needs of the community. Our organization actively works to integrate services between our bi-county region.

In December 2008, Action Network opened a second Family Resource Center in Point Arena. In March 2009 the Gualala Family Resource Center moved closer to downtown and expanded its square footage to better serve its growing number of clients. Action Network Family Resource Centers provide bi-lingual (English/Spanish) and culturally sensitive (Hispanic and Native American) social services to children and their families. County services are located a two-hour drive away in the county seats of Ukiah and Santa Rosa.
