  • Mission:
  • The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas County, Inc. is to help children reach their full potential through professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships with measurable impact.

  • History:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of America were the pioneers of youth mentoring beginning in 1904 in New York City, and are now the national leader in providing one-to-one mentoring relationships between volunteers and children throughout the United States.

Incorporated in 1967, our agency has been serving the children of Pinellas County for more than 40 years. Big Brothers Big Sister's history began in Pinellas County in 1967, when a group of men formed a Big Brothers chapter out of concern for the number of male youth involved with the Department of Juvenile Justice. In 1969, Alice Young joined Big Brothers' efforts and founded a Big Sisters chapter, becoming the first local Big Sister. The two chapters merged in 1978 to become Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas County, Inc. (BBBSPC) Our programs and mission were extended to include children living in Hernando County in 1994 and in Citrus County as of July 2005. During that time, BBBS has consistently been the premier youth development mentoring agency in our service area.

We operate and administer the agency in Pinellas County, with field offices located in Citrus and Hernando Counties.

The agency recently received recognition as a "Top 35 Performing Agency" of more than 400 Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the country. In 2009, the agency received the Annie E. Casey Foundation Family Strengthening Award for "engaging parents as partners" to help children improve their odds for success. The agency was selected as one of ten award winning agencies in the nation.

In addition, this past year the agency's CEO and management Team were selected as finalists for the Tampa Bay Business Journal's Management Team of the Year, and the agency was just recently nominated for their Non-Profit of the Year, as well (results as yet to be announced). We have also just been awarded the 2010 Children's Week Community Innovation Award, presented by United Way of Florida and The Lawton Chiles Foundation.
