General

  • Mission:
  • Citizens for Adequate Housing, Inc., ends homelessness one family at a time, by providing a dignified, nurturing and supportive environment that empowers each family to reach its social and economic potential. Our mission calls us to support our families with respect and dignity, and to do so in ways which foster independence and self-sufficiency, ultimately breaking the cycle of homelessness. Today we do so by providing emergency housing and services. Our shelter programs encompass emergency family shelter, sober family living transitional housing, and permanent low income affordable housing. Our shelters, the Inn Between and the Inn Transition, and scattered sites are currently home to 25 families and some 60 children. Our permanent housing program, housing 16 very low income families, is offered through our Inn Homes program.

  • History:
  • We began back in 1983 when Mary Jane Lee, a North Shore resident, realized her neighbors were facing homelessness. With the help her friends, family and community leaders; soon, our emergency shelter program began and the Inn Between opened its doors. A few years later, our sober living program was created to address the crippling issue of addiction among homeless families, and the Inn Transition was opened. Finally, a little more than decade into the founding of CAH, the agency moved into the next logical phase: creating permanent, affordable rental housing for those living near the poverty level. With the purchase of the first multi-family home, our Inn Homes program was created. Today, CAH owns five multi-family homes.
A simple desire to help a neighbor 25 years ago has grown to help hundreds of families. Wanting to end homelessness was Mary Jane’s vision, and continues to be our guiding light. Our founder lived her life as a vehicle of change, and our charge is to honor that legacy every day, with every family.
