  • Mission:
  • The mission of Colorado River Watch is to provide an educational opportunity for students, adults, and citizen to understand the value and function of Colorado’s rivers, lakes, and wetland ecosystems and to provide the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the Water Quality Control Commission, water resource managers, and all interested entities with high quality spatial and temporal aqua ecosystem data to insure informed decision making in legislation or other decisions affecting water quality and aqua ecosystems.

  • History:
  • The Colorado River Watch Program was founded in 1989 by the Colorado Division of Wildlife with six stations on the Yampa River. Since then, the program has grown to cover 1000 stations and over 400 water bodies throughout the state. Annually, we serve about 120 groups that monitor approximately 450 active stations, and we have worked with more than 70,000 volunteers since our inception.

River Watch currently has three full time employees and is the largest water quality generator in the state, collecting more data than even the Colorado Department of Health and Environment. River Watch is the only entity in the state that tests chemical, physical, and biological indicators of health in all watersheds in Colorado. This data is available through the River Watch site and is uploaded on the EPA STORET database which can be accessed by any public or private entity.
