General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Active Transportation Alliance is to make bicycling, walking and public transit so safe, convenient and fun that we will achieve a significant shift from environmentally harmful, sedentary travel to clean, active travel. We advocate for transportation that encourages and promotes safety, physical activity, health, recreation, social interaction, equity, environmental stewardship and resource conservation. Based on our 20-year vision we envision Chicagoland as being a region with half as many crashes and where half of all trips are made by walking, biking and transit. Under the banner of the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, the organization has a secured significant wins for pedestrians and transit users, including bikes on Metra and Safe Routes to School programs.

  • History:
  • Active Transportation Alliance is currently working towards our 20-year vision and has made a number of accomplishments towards that vision. Among theses accomplishments are that Active Trans has helped build more than 7,000 miles of bikeways across the region; encouraged drivers to sign the Drive with Care Pledge and commit to safe and respectful driving; mobilized suburban coordinators who tailor bike advocacy and improvements to communities around the region; built a network of bike lanes and bike parking in 17 Chicagoland villages and cities, including Lansing, Homewood and Evanston; enabled children to walk and bike to school from Sauk Village to Midlothian through Safe Routes to School; Inspired more than 2,700 individuals from 205 companies to commute by bike through the Bicycle Commuter Challenge.

In 2006, the Active Transportation Alliance lobbied rigorously to include bicycles on Metra commuter trains and Chicago Transit Authority trains during weekend and non-rush hours, and secured accommodation for bicycles on all Chicago Transit Authority buses at all times.

Sixteen cities across the United States can celebrated the start of national Bike to Work Week in May 2006 with the news that the League of American Bicyclists has awarded them the coveted designation of “Bicycle Friendly Community”. The award, given at levels from Bronze to Platinum, recognizes those communities that are improving conditions for bicyclists and bicycling safety. Thanks to years of cycling improvements, infrastructure, and education, Active Trans' application for recognition earned Chicago a Silver Level designation in 2005.

Active Transportation Alliance helped craft the city of Chicago’s landmark Complete Streets Policy. This important policy mandates that all users, including pedestrians and bicyclists, must be accommodated in all transportation projects. This policy will save lives and is a groundbreaking step toward restoring the health of Chicago's streets. Complete Streets is an exciting part of Active Trans’ strategic plan, to be released in mid- 2007.
