  • Mission:
  • Catholic Charities brings hope, resources and advocacy to the poor and most vulnerable among us regardless of faith, race, marital status or condition in life. The mission of Catholic Charities El Programa Hispano is to increase self-sufficiency within the Latino community, to empower individuals to achieve a better quality of life, and to promote mutual respect and understanding between cultures.

  • History:
  • Catholic Charities (CC) is a social service organization established in 1932. Today CC has 12 programs and 21 grantee agencies serving people from diverse backgrounds with respect to age, religion, race and ethnicity. The largest of these programs is El Programa Hispano (EPH), which has been providing specialized Latino services throughout the Portland metro area since 1982. The mission is to increase self-sufficiency within the Latino community, to empower individuals to achieve a better quality of life, and to promote mutual respect and understanding between cultures. EPH, located in Gresham, OR and Portland, OR, was created to respond to the overwhelming needs of the rapidly growing Latino community, which has continued to grow at an astounding rate. Our most notable success is to be an agency serving the community from within the community. EPH is and has been an integral part of the Latino community for over 25 years. Presently, EPH operates a number of bilingual and bicultural service programs for low-income, monolingual Spanish-speaking Latinos. Services focus on breaking down the barriers of cultural and linguistic isolation by promoting self-sufficiency, supporting attainment of a higher quality of life and improving access to health for the Latino population. Some of our programs include: anti-poverty services, skill-building, information and referral, support groups, intensive case-management, services for youth and children, gang-prevention, mental health counseling, and domestic violence and sexual assault services (Project UNICA).

EPH’s Project UNICA (Un Nuevo Inicio para Concluir el Abuso – A New Beginning to End Abuse) has assisted Spanish-speaking individuals and families affected by domestic violence and/or sexual assault since 1992. Project UNICA's goal is to provide support, advocacy, and opportunity for self-empowerment, enabling survivors to exercise free and informed life choices free of violence and oppression. The program works to ensure that Latino individuals and families have equal access to community resources. Our program provides a cross-cultural model that is inclusive of their heritage, while at the same time builds a bridge between the mainstream culture and their own.
