  • Mission:
  • Our Mission is to provide appropriate and diversified programs and activities that serve to attract and hold area youth to the Clubhouse. We provide environments that teach children the skills needed to build positive lives, attitudes and behaviors.

  • History:
  • Since 1926, Boys & Girls Club of Buffalo has been in the forefront of youth development, working with young people from disadvantaged economic, social, and family circumstances. We have actively sought to enrich the lives of girls and boys whom other youth agencies failed to reach and we are dedicated to ensuring that our community's disadvantaged youngsters have greater access to quality programs and services that will enhance their lives and shape their futures.

The Boys Club was established in 1926 by the Rotary Club of Buffalo. The Rotary Club’s intent was to create a youth agency, which would provide after school programs and guidance to the juvenile delinquency problems of the year. The first Club in the City of Buffalo is still residing at 282 Babcock Street and is the largest Club owned and operated by Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo. In 1986, the Board recognized the need to include girls and reincorporated as Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo.

Over the past ten years, the agency has expanded from five Clubhouses to sixteen, and now delivers services to over 8,500 Buffalo youth annually, throughout Buffalo’s most impoverished neighborhoods. BGCB provides character-building programs designed to draw youth into the Club and engage them in constructive activities in a safe and supervised setting. Every child and teen has the opportunity to participate in age-appropriate programs and activities in five core areas: Education & Career Development; Health & Life Skills; Fine Arts; Character & Leadership Development; and Sports, Fitness & Recreation. All programs and activities are designed to maximize opportunities for young people to acquire four basic “senses” which help them grow into responsible and caring citizens, including:
    • Sense of Competence - the feeling there is something boys and girls can accomplish
    • Sense of Usefulness - the opportunity to do something of value for other people.
    • Sense of Belonging - a setting where young people know they “fit” and are accepted.
    • Sense of Power or Influence - a chance to be heard and to influence decisions.
