General

  • Mission:
  • CSHC promotes the health and academic success of children and youth by increasing access to the high quality health care and support services provided by school health centers.

We pursue this mission by advocating for public policies that support school health centers; building support among policymakers, community leaders, parents and students; and providing technical support to new and existing health centers.

By putting health care where kids are - in schools - school health centers increase access to care and improve student health so that teachers can teach and students can learn. With our dedicated staff and volunteers we advocate for and support more than 150 school health centers throughout the state.

  • History:
  • California's first school health center opened in 1986 with several others following shortly thereafter. These centers began meeting informally and, in 1995, incorporated as the California Association of School-Based and School-Linked Health Programs. After incorporation, the Association functioned with a volunteer board and executive director and minimal operating budget until 2002 when core support funding was obtained from two foundations. The first paid staff were hired in 2003 with an annual budget of approximately $100K. Soon after, the organization changed its name to the California School Health Centers Association, made significant changes in Board composition, and developed a strategic plan. During the past five years the organization has successfully grown to an annual budget of just under $1 million and ten staff and 14 board members.
