General

  • Mission:
  • Birambye International (Birambye), a Colorado based 501(c)(3), is an international NGO specializing in building economic enterprises with our clients to benefit disadvantaged communities and to further define true sustainable development. Birambye is a hub composed of the leading professional engineers, architects, and planners in the sustainable development sectors of energy, water, sanitation, construction with local materials, and triple bottom line metrics. These sustainable technologies are the heart of the enterprise, but also are transferred to the local contractors in the community to start innovative micro-enterprises.

Birambye International’s mission is to work in partnership with disadvantaged communities to ethically build economic engines that achieve a positive “triple bottom line” (3BL) of economic self‐sufficiency, environmental stewardship, and social equity. Birambye provides expertise in appropriate technology, engineering, architecture, planning and other professional services, and integrates the unique capabilities and culture of each community into development projects.

  • History:
  • The concept of Birambye International began in 2005 when co-founder Mark Reiner was working as co-lead on an infrastructure assessment for the Master Plan of the capital city of Kigali, Rwanda. In 2006, Mark led workshops at an engineering university in Kigali as a volunteer with Engineers Without Borders ‐ USA. The ensuing work brought Mark to Kigarama, Rwanda where he met Victor Monroy, the director of the orphanage Children’s Village Kigarama (CVK), and an expert in sustainable agriculture. Victor approached Mark with the idea of making the orphanage a self‐sustaining place for the children to live, learn and work. He asked for Mark’s support and sustainable engineering expertise in the design of an eco‐lodge next to the orphanage on the shore of Lake Kivu.

Mark was inspired by Victor’s request and shared this offer with the students of a course he was
teaching at the University of Colorado-Denver, Urbanization of Developing Countries. The course was an introduction to the field of development planning and explored the associated engineering required for sustainable development in a developing country. One of his graduate students, Kat Pecoraro, an architect, took on the design and feasibility of constructing an eco‐lodge near CVK. On the last day of the semester, Kat mentioned this was more than an academic project and she wanted to see it constructed. Shortly thereafter, Kat Pecoraro and Mark Reiner co‐founded Birambye International.
