  • Mission:
  • Catamount Institute's mission is to inspire ecological stewardship

  • History:
  • The founders of Catamount Institute (CI), established in 1998, saw an opportunity to positively impact the community by creating an environmental organization dedicated to exploring and developing innovative ways to "inspire ecological stewardship." With the purchase of 142 acres of land on the north slope of Pikes Peak, and with access to thousands of acres of public lands, the property became a campus and biological field station for research, open classrooms and experiential learning for science-driven outdoor education.

Over time, CI produced a wide range of nature-based programs targeting a broad audience of learners, from elementary school students to business leaders in the entire Pikes Peak Region. In order to effectively deliver such an extensive array of programming, CI evolved into two separate and discrete organizations: Catamount Institute, a public organization, continues to focus on K -12 education and leadership programming and development for businesses and professionals; while Catamount Center (CC), a private charity, is dedicated to ecological research.

In 2001, in an effort to focus on improving opportunities for underserved students and schools in urban areas by offering distinctive after-school programs, CI opened offices in Colorado Springs. CI launched the YES (Young Environmental Stewards) program, which won the 2002 Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education Award for Best New Program and in 2003 garnered the prestigious El Pomar "Award for Excellence" in the Environmental category.

Keepers of the Water, a highly rewarding, site-based and interactive program which promotes an understanding of water ecology and conservation was developed in cooperation with Colorado Springs Utilities provided the model for the development of other site-based custom programs including Creek Watch and Keepers of the Earth; all programs that emphasize nature as means to stimulate learning.

In March 2009, CI launched the Pikes Peak Sustainable Business Network in response to a community-wide call for action to support and encourage sustainable business practices in our region. The primary goal of this collaborative initiative is to promote behavior change among businesses, policy makers, and community leaders and to engender a culture of sustainability throughout our region. PPSBN memberships provide a funding stream to support our youth programs.
