  • Mission:
  • Carmen Pampa Fund generates financial and human resources to support the growth and development of the Unidad Académica Campesina-Carmen Pampa (UAC-CP). The UAC-CP is a unique college in rural Bolivia that creates economic and social change by providing higher education for poor, indigenous young men and women. Carmen Pampa Fund and the UAC-CP share a vision of social, economic, and environmental justice for the people of Bolivia's rural area.

  • History:
  • Planning for the College in Bolivia began in 1990 as a joint effort between educators and the local indigenous people. The groups were united over their concern regarding the nonexistence of higher education for young people in one of South America’s poorest areas. Higher education, they knew, would dismantle educational barriers and lift people out of poverty.

Since the first group of 54 students enrolled for classes at the UAC-CP in 1993, the College has experienced tremendous growth. At the beginning of the 2012 academic year, 723 students enrolled for classes and theses studies in one of the College’s five specialized degree-granting programs.

In less than 20 years, the College has become a vibrant catalyst for change in a region where the average family income is stunningly low. Today, more than 500 men and women who completed their academic studies (309 have completed thesis projects) are now working to improve life for their families and their communities. In addition, the College’s community health, research and sustainable economic development projects reach out to the surrounding region.

In 1999, Carmen Pampa Fund (CPF) was established in St. Paul, Minnesota, with the mission of supporting the financial and human resources necessary to operate the UAC-CP. Today, CPF is responsible for fundraising, disseminating information about the College in the US, recruiting volunteers to serve at the College, facilitating relationships with US colleges and universities, and participating in the Joint Planning and Oversight Council that manages the relationship between CPF and the UAC-CP.
