  • Mission:
  • The goal of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. By remaining true to our mission, we will fulfill our vision for all children to achieve success in life.

  • History:
  • In 1981, a group of social entrepreneurs created a mentoring program for children in Central Pennsylvania to match volunteer mentors with vulnerable children who needed and wanted positive role models. In 1985 this mentoring program affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and became a stand alone 501(c) 3 known as Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region. As part of this program the adult mentor, often referred to as a “Big” and youth participant referred to as a “Little” agree to meet once a week to share normal, everyday experiences like talking, playing a game or sharing a pizza. The idea is simple. The results are outstanding. Children in the program demonstrate a remarkable spirit of compassion, camaraderie, and confidence. Studies prove that their grades improve, as well as their relationships with family members and attitudes towards life.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is an evidence-based organization, which allows the agency to regularly monitor, measure and improve the way we deliver our mentoring programs. The Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado, a leader in researching violence in our country, has listed Big Brothers Big Sisters as one of only 11 programs (out of 800 researched) that positively impact the life of a child. Big Brothers Big Sisters is also recognized as a “Blue Print Program” by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency because of the training and support we provide to our mentors and matches.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region is the premier youth-mentoring organization in the area. Each year Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region serves between 700 and 1,000 children in Dauphin, Perry, Cumberland, and Lebanon counties. We continue to identify new families, schools, and communities that could benefit from our mentoring programs. Big Brothers Big Sisters is considered the area’s gold standard in mentoring practices. Our Program Outcome Evaluations show the positive impacts our programs have on the youth involved, particularly in the areas of self-confidence, academic performance and attitudes towards school, relationships with peers and adults, prevention of delinquent behavior and substance abuse, and sense of the future.
