  • Mission:
  • Ayuda’s mission is to protect the legal rights of low-income immigrants in the D.C. metropolitan area.

We are the District’s leading source of multi-lingual legal and social assistance for low-income Latinos and foreign-born persons in immigration, human trafficking, domestic violence, and family law. Our overall goals are to improve the ability of our clients to live safe, violence-free lives and become fully participating members of our community.

  • History:
  • Since 1973, Ayuda has protected the rights of low-income immigrants in the Washington, DC area. Ayuda improves the ability of low-income immigrants to live safe, violence-free lives, and become fully participating members of our community through providing access to high-quality, affordable legal and social services. Since our inception, Ayuda has supported thousands of immigrants and has become DC’s leader of multilingual legal and social assistance in immigration and domestic violence issues affecting low-income immigrants. In recent years, Ayuda launched projects to protect victims of human trafficking and at risk undocumented and/or unaccompanied children. Ayuda’s culturally sensitive services and long history in the DC area immigrant community make Ayuda a safe and trusted community space where foreign-born persons can turn to for help to navigate the legal system, resolve their immigration status and gain access to social services.

Ayuda has been a Recognized Organization by the US Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) since 1979. Our staff has the capacity to serve clients directly in Spanish, French, Polish and Japanese, and regularly work with trusted interpreters to serve clients who speak other languages. Ayuda advances social justice and client empowerment through legal and social services including legal assistance and representation, emergency services for victims of domestic violence and trafficking, public policy advocacy, collaboration and referrals to other nonprofit organizations, community education, and training other institutions to be able to better serve immigrants. Our services give low-income immigrants in the DC metropolitan region a real chance to overcome obstacles and become successful Americans.
