  • Mission:
  • We have sites located throughout the state of California that work with their local school districts to development programs to enhance teacher knowledge about international content. Project leaders provide standards-based professional development in history and international studies to prepare students to live, work, and be informed, active citizens in a world where conditions, people, and distant events may have a critical impact on their own and others’ lives. We do this by:

    * Developing teachers’ academic content knowledge and strengthening their instructional skills;
    * Conducting site and statewide programs designed to bridge cultures, cultivate equity, and enhance access for California’s diverse student population; and
    * Examining the complexity of historical and contemporary issues from a range of discipline perspectives.

    In 1995, we saw that teachers needed pedagogical skills as well as content knowledge to teach the 21st century child. We added the mission to expand the academically rigorous participation of students who are educationally passive or disengaged from instruction and learning processes; 2) create inclusive classroom cultures characterized by mutual respect, collaboration, problem-solving, and effective teamwork among all students; and 3) develop a cadre of exemplary teacher leaders who will extend equity-focused professional development beyond the project schools through coaching and training.

  • History:
  • We began as a state-funded staff development project to prepare educators to teach about international issues. In 1995, we saw the need to combine teaching strategies with content to maximize the delivery of effective lesson plans. After the recession in 2001, our state funding was cut back by 80%. We have relied on a combination of private grants and school contracts to supplement our funding. Due to the state fiscal crisis, school contracts are drying up, yet the need and demand for our work keeps growing.
