  • Mission:
  • Blue Ventures is an award-winning marine conservation organisation, dedicated to working with communities to conserve threatened marine environments. We work with some of the world's poorest communities to develop conservation and alternative income initiatives to protect biodiversity and local livelihoods. We aim to provide these communities with the knowledge and the skills to live sustainably. The results of our work help us to propose new ideas to benefit coastal communities everywhere.

  • History:
  • From 2003, Blue Ventures (BV) has implemented applied, multidisciplinary marine conservation, education and research programmes in Madagascar, Fiji, Belize and Malaysia. Winning the SEED award (2005) reflected recognition of our innovative, entrepreneurial solutions for sustainable development. In 2006, BV created the largest Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) in the Indian Ocean (Velondriake), winning the UNPD Equator Prize for biodiversity conservation and the WWF J. Paul Getty award for conservation leadership. BV has now replicated the Velondriake model at over 50 other sites in Madagascar and other areas in the Indian Ocean. We have been developing fisheries research and conservation efforts for over 500km of coastline, focusing on shark, turtle and reef fisheries. Through the creation of sustainable aquaculture initiatives in Madagascar, the first commercial scale sea cucumber farms in the Indian Ocean now provide alternative income sources for the communities involved. Blue Ventures has created a community-based carbon offsetting programme investing in fuel efficient stoves in rural communities, delivering tangible health, environmental, and emissions benefits. Further illustrating BV’s integrated approach to conservation, we have developed reproductive health and family planning services in partner communities as part of our integrated population, health and environment programmes. We have enabled hundreds of children to attend school in partner communities through our educational scholarships, and we provide intensive residential marine conservation scholarships to over 50 graduate students from developing countries as well as fully-funded undergraduate and post-graduate study scholarships to under-privileged students. BV has provided field-based training in marine conservation for over 1,000 international volunteers and has created socially and environmentally-responsible ecotourism programmes with partner communities providing long-term financial sustainability for conservation efforts winning the UK’s Responsible Tourism Award a record 6 times (from 2004 – 2010).
