  • Mission:
  • AIWA seeks to empower low-income, limited English speaking immigrant women and youth through education, leadership development and collective engagement in efforts to improve their living and working conditions. AIWA supports the self determination and active participation of low-income, limited English speaking immigrant women, youth and their communities and firmly believes developing grassroots leaders to collectively negotiate solutions to issues impacting immigrant communities.

  • History:
  • Founded in 1983, Asian Immigrant Women Advocates (AIWA) is committed to providing immigrant women and youth the resources, tools, and opportunities to be their own best advocates. AIWA’s community consists of low-income Chinese-, Vietnamese-, Korean-, and Spanish-speaking immigrant women from 21-65 years of age, and youth from 16-21 years of age. To address their immediate needs, AIWA began by teaching English to immigrant hotel workers in San Francisco. Over the years, the program has evolved to include weekly workplace literacy classes, leadership development trainings, educational and health workshops and targeted justice campaigns, as well as youth development projects. AIWA continuously brings in new constituents through the classes and special programs offered at our main location in Oakland and satellite office in San Jose. Using a specific leadership methodology (outlined below), AIWA encourages many of the women who initially join AIWA classes and programs to become involved in leadership roles and collective engagement efforts. In the process, these women also gain skills to improve their economic status and that of their families.
