General

  • Mission:
  • The San Luis Obispo County Agricultural Education Committee is committed to the the exposure of all aspects of agriculture to teachers, students and the community, to create and maintain an understanding and appreciation of the contribution of agriculture and related industries to the economy as well as the health and nutrition of the population.

  • History:
  • Importance of Agriculture Education
As society has become more urban, children have little opportunity to connect with agriculture, not realizing that their food just doesn't appear at the supermarket. Citizens must appreciate agriculture so that we can continue keeping our biggest natural resource- the ability to grow our own food and fiber -within our country's borders. As additional regulations constantly make farming and ranching more difficult in the US, agriculture is being moved to other countries. Our dependence on other countries for oil is bad enough, it is crucial for our food source to remain within our country's control.
    The Committee
In the mid 1980's, the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau saw the need to teach children and teachers about agriculture so the Agriculture Education Committee was organized. Since 1989, the Agriculture Education Committee has provided various programs linking the agricultural community to teachers, their students and the community. In the mid-1990's, the Committee obtained an 501(c)3 status, making it an independent, non-profit organization. The committee is made up of educators and/or agriculturalists who are charged with the mission teaching kids where their food and fiber originates.
    Programs
Ten consecutive years of teacher seminars, fair contests for classes, teacher in-services, a teacher resource library and eight years providing the Great AGventure to over 10,000 fourth grade students from throughout the county. The Great AGventure is an exploration through agriculture, giving over 1200 fourth grade students, 50 teachers and over 200 parent chaperones the opportunity to learn how agriculture is a part of their daily lives.
