  • Mission:
  • The Mission of each Center has two components:
•To provide, free of charge, the highest quality, state-of-the-art, multisensory tutorial reading and written language instruction to children with dyslexia.
•To train tutors in the art, science, and practice of tutoring children using the Orton-Gillingham approach to multisensory teaching of reading, writing, and spelling.

  • History:
  • The Allentown Masonic Learning Center for Children belongs to a family of tutoring Centers established over a decade ago by the nonprofit Masonic Learning Centers for Children, Inc., in collaboration with the Language Disorders Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital. There are now 55 Centers in 15 northeastern and midwestern states.
The Allentown Center opened its doors in the fall of 1998. Since that time, we have tutored 148 children with dyslexia, a neurological disorder that makes it extremely difficult to read, write and spell. Most children remain at the Center for two to three years. In addition, we have trained 40 scholar trainees using the Orton-Gillingham approach at no cost to either the children or trainees.

Until last year, we received enough funding from the Masonic Learning Centers for Children, Inc. which oversees all 55 Centers. However, due to the economic crisis, our total budget allotment from Headquarters this year was $60,000.00. Therefore, we only received enough funds to enable us to tutor 22 students and 4 trainees. It costs the Center $5,000.00 to tutor one child over the course of the academic school year. Currently, we have 21 students on our wait list that desperately need services. Furthermore, we have been notified that the 2010-2011 academic year budget (Sept. 2010-August 2011) will undergo a further reduction of $10,000.00. It has now become the duty of each Learning Center to raise money through fund raising activities and grants in order to keep the Learning Center doors open.
