General

  • Mission:
  • Bay Aging provides programs and services for people of all ages through four major divisions - Community Living (home care, meals on wheels, respite, adult day care, personal care, nursing care, Alzheimer's disease support groups, volunteer programs, etc.); Bay Transit (public transportation for people of all ages and mobility management for people with disabilities); Bay Family Housing (weatherization, indoor plumbing rehabilitation, home repair, housing and financial counceling, senior apartments, etc.); Community Action (youth mentoring, job readiness, and financial literacy; employment support and linkages to other health and human services and housing.

  • History:
  • The area served by Bay Aging, the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck, is a rural 2,600 square mile area encompassing ten counties and two planning districts. Public transportation and mobility management services only are provided in two adjacent counties. In addition, Bay Aging constructed and manages a three-story senior apartment building (for people 62 years and older only) in another county located outside the Middle Peninsula/Northern Neck region.

Since its formation as a nonprofit 501(C)(3) in 1978, Bay Aging has successfully maintained and developed new programs, while aggressively pursuing and securing grants and funding to provide support programs to serve people of all ages. Audits of all programs document fiscal integrity and ability to manage grant funds on an annual basis.

The agency successfully operates most traditional aging services, while introducing new and innovative programs that serve entire families through community action partnerships. Bay Aging has been a leader in many fronts (i.e. Information and Referral on a regional basis, providing the founding chairman in establishing the Northern Neck Middle Peninsula Telemedicine Consortium connecting health providers with the University of Virginia's telemedicine system, established the first regional public transportation service, worked with 10 county governments as their single family housing provider and more).

Bay Aging has many excellent working relationships with civic organizations, community groups, service agencies, the faith community, schools, government agencies, businesses and individuals throughout the region and has succeeded in gaining long-term community support for its initiatives. Bay Aging is also represented on the Workforce Investment Board and is a member of all active local Chambers of Commerce, reinforcing its strong ties to the private sector.

We attribute the success of our programs and services in part to the many strong partnerships and collaborations cultivated over the past 32 years.
