General

  • Mission:
  • The California Family Health Council, Inc. (CFHC) works to create healthy individuals, families and communities. CFHC accomplishes its mission by advancing the understanding and support of sexual and reproductive health in California communities and beyond through its umbrella of services including public policy, research, education, and clinic support initiatives that provide access to healthcare for millions of individuals.

  • History:
  • For the past 40 years, CFHC has served as the primary Basic Contraceptive Service grantee in California for the national family planning program, Title X of the Public Health Service Act (1970), through a grant with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Population Affairs. Under this grant CFHC funds family planning and reproductive health services for low-income and uninsured clients through 74 health care agencies at 316 clinic sites throughout the State. These sites represent a diverse set of health care delivery settings including county health department clinics, school-based health centers, community and free clinics, and single or multi-site nonprofit health centers.

Through this network CFHC supports the delivery of health services to over 1.1 million clients each year. The vast majority of clients served lives at or below the federal poverty level (over 70% of clients) and is uninsured (83% of clients). An important component of CFHC’s work with these clinics is ensuring open access to high quality family planning and reproductive health services for all individuals.

CFHC was formed in 1997 through a merger of the Los Angeles Regional Family Planning Council (LARFPC) and the California Family Planning Council (CFPC). Prior to the merger, LARFPC and CFPC had more than 30 years combined experience providing family planning services throughout the State. In 1998, Education Programs Associates, a women’s health care training and resource agency with its own 18 year history, merged with CFHC.
