  • Mission:
  • The mission of Blue Planet International Explorers’ Bazaar & Writers’ Room is to inspire students to write, to teach them the skills they need to write well, and to offer them fun and effective ways to see their writing come to life.

Blue Planet believes that skill at writing has an effect at three levels: personal, where students can express themselves creatively and constructively; community, where they can advocate for themselves, their families, and their neighbors; and global, where they can contribute to international cooperation and peace.

  • History:
  • Blue Planet International Explorers’ Bazaar & Writers’ Room (Blue Planet Writers’ Room for short) was founded in September 2008 by two local writer/educators, Cora Bresciano and Susan Gay Hyatt. To set the tone for Blue Planet’s vision, we built our first public event around International Human Rights Day in December 2008, hosting a Global Write-A-Thon for Amnesty International. Members of the community wrote more than 100 letters advocating for prisoners of conscience held in repressive regimes around the world. Lake Worth Playhouse donated the use of their rehearsal hall to us for this undertaking.

In 2009, we began our first series of workshops for the students served by For The Children, leading sixth graders – many of them immigrants from Haiti – in writing about themselves, each other, and their community. In July 2009, we moved into our administrative office in downtown Lake Worth. Our first four months in this space were rent-free, thanks to the kindness of our landlords, Bruce and Maryanne Webber of the Webber Galleries.

In Fall 2009, we completed our first international collaboration, bringing two teaching artists here from Kids’ Own Publishing Partnership in Sligo, Ireland. They brought with them a visual and media art exhibit that was installed at Educational Gallery Group (Eg2) in West Palm Beach, and they led professional development workshops for teachers and teaching artists. In addition, they held two workshops in which local elementary school students interacted and created with children in two Irish schools, in real time, using e-conferencing software and webcams. The Center for Creative Education of West Palm Beach was a third partner in this project, providing teaching artists and artist housing, among other contributions.

Fall also saw our participation as the first-ever Regional Affiliate for Palm Beach County in the national Scholastic Writing Awards. We received 138 entries of prose and poetry from county students in grades 7-12, and our volunteer judges were able to award 4 Gold Keys and 29 Silver Keys within that group. Our Gold Key winners went on to be judged at the national level, with one winning a national Gold Key and an American Voices award, and the other winning the national Gold Key.

Our other community events included our first annual Bloomsday celebration on June 16 – the day James Joyce set his epic novel ULYSSES and a day that’s celebrated with readings from the book in cities around the world – and a second annual Global Write-A-Thon in December.

With few resources, but an intense dedication to our mission, we succeeded in reaching more than 300 students in our first none months of programming.
