  • Mission:
  • The Champaign Public Library connects our community with the power of knowledge, the world of culture and ideas, and the joy of reading. We support the essential role of reading for success in life and work, the need for easy and equal access to lifelong learning, and the value of enriching and inspiring experiences.

  • History:
  • The Champaign Public Library began as a gift of a building from a private reading club in 1876. Over the past 140 years three new library buildings were built to accomodate ever-increasing use of the library by the public. Today the Champaign Public Library is located in a new, 122,000 square foot building that opened in 2008 and was built with a combination of public and private funds.

Each day, an average of 2500 people visit the library. Last year community members checked out 2.6 million items or 34 items for every person living in Champaign (population 75,254).
