  • Mission:
  • Our mission at AVANCE- El Paso is to help young families break the cycle of poverty through early childhood development, parenting, adult literacy, and family literacy.

  • History:
  • AVANCE-El Paso is a community-based, nonprofit organization that provides family support and education services to at-risk, economically impoverished families. We are one of eleven chapters affiliated with our parent agency, AVANCE, Inc., established in San Antonio, Texas in 1973. AVANCE has been nationally recognized for establishing a successful family intervention program for hard-to-reach families, with special emphasis on serving Hispanics.

During our thirteen-year history, AVANCE-El Paso has expanded from serving 225 parents and children at one site with seven staff and a budget of $250,000 in 1997 to serving 1,400 parents and children at seventeen sites, with 42 staff members, 40 AmeriCorps members and a budget of $2.1 million in 2010.

AVANCE works with both the parent and the child in order to have a profound impact on the whole family, while changing a generational mindset. We are hosted by schools and serve neighborhoods, which not only makes it more convenient by not requiring families to come to a central location, but helps build a sense of community and a stronger bond with their children’s educational environment.

Statistics show that the typical parent we serve is a 29 year old mother with eight years of schooling, minimal knowledge of English, two to three children, and an annual family income of $9,000. In spite of these disadvantages, the most recent study performed shows that AVANCE children outscore their peers by 11 to 17 points on standardized tests (TAKS) including writing, math and science. The figures speak volumes and prove that poverty does not have to be the cause of school failure and more importantly, early education, parental involvement, and literacy make a lasting and profound impact on children and families.
