  • Mission:
  • The Children’s Museum of Tacoma has nurtured children and supported the adults who care about them for nearly 25 years, carrying out the Museum’s mission to “Celebrate the power of play in the lifelong journey of learning.” Through exhibits, on-site programming, and outreach, the Museum seeks to engage, educate, and support families in the South Puget Sound area. Museum exhibits and programs harness the power of play as children engage in opportunities for social/emotional, cognitive, physical development and growth. Additionally, the Museum recognizes the importance of providing an enriching experience for the accompanying adults. Museum exhibits and programs are intentionally layered to educate adults on child development, provide resources to support their role as parents/care givers, and offer opportunities to strengthen social connections while simultaneously engaging children. Parents and caregivers are prepared to provide a more enriching learning environment for their children, can approach parenting/care giving more confidently and with a greater network of social support, and become more connected with available community resources. Thus, the Museum strengthens families, providing opportunities to learn and grow together.

  • History:
  • The Children's Museum of Tacoma was established in 1985 by parents, teachers and community leaders dedicated to creating unique resources for families in Tacoma and the South Puget Sound Region. The Museum opened in 1986 as a non-profit organization and remained in its original location, in the heart of downtown Tacoma, for 10 years; rotating single theme exhibits every 18-months.

Due to excellence in education, programming and hands-on exhibits, the Museum earned a reputation as a cornerstone for early learning. As a result, the Museum's physical location and size could no longer accommodate the community's demand for its services. The Museum's Board of Directors voted to relocate to the Theater District's historic Kress Building.

Since February 1997, the Museum has featured both single and multiple-theme exhibits and an array of complementary programming in its 3,800 square foot, storefront location.
