  • Mission:
  • 826LA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to students’ future success. With this approach and objective in mind, we provide assistance with student publications, after-school tutoring, evening and weekend workshops, help for English language learners, and in-school tutoring. All our free programs are challenging and enjoyable and strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

  • History:
  • 826LA is modeled after 826 Valencia, the address and name of a non-profit writing lab and tutoring center located in San Francisco’s Mission District. Founded by writer Dave Eggers, educator Nínive Calegari, and a group of energetic and passionate volunteers, 826 Valencia opened its doors in April of 2002 to students eager to write and teachers looking for support. 826 Valencia’s success has been replicated in Chicago, Illinois; Brooklyn, New York; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Seattle, Washington; Boston, Massachusetts; Los Angeles, California; and Washington, DC. 826 Valencia now also serves as the headquarters of 826 National, the umbrella organization that coordinates the adaptation of 826’s tutoring and mentorship model. In 2005, 826LA opened its doors in the historic SPARC building, a decommissioned police station in Venice that houses arts and writing organizations. The Venice site quickly filled to capacity and in early 2008, we heeded to repeated requests for our services on the east side of town and opened a second center in Echo Park, a mixed-income, ethnically diverse community composed of immigrant families and young artists and professionals. While 826LA receives invaluable programmatic and organizational support from 826 National, we are responsible for raising all of the funds necessary to support our chapter.
