General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Cade Museum is to promote a culture of creativity and innovation. The Museum will focus on America’s unique national legacy of innovation; the brain science behind creative thought; current inventions and technologies; inventors and their stories; and he inventive process from the laboratory to the marketplace. These themes will be presented to the public through programs, competitions, virtual exhibits, workshops, and lectures. A 55,000 square foot building is planned for downtown Gainesville, Florida.

  • History:
  • The Cade Museum Foundation was established in late 2004 by the family of Dr. J. Robert Cade, best known as the inventor who led the team that created Gatorade at the University of Florida in 1965. From 2005-2009, the Cade family worked with consultants and other experts to determine the feasibility of building a museum in Gainesville, Florida.

By late 2009, the Foundation had secured land from the City of Gainesville for a 55,000 square foot building, come up with a conceptual design, presented the project idea to public officials and dozens of civic groups in Gainesville, completed an extensive fund-raising feasibility study, and added the first round of community members to the Board of Directors. The Foundation also was asked to participate in a Chamber of Commerce–led effort to reorient the region’s economy to the technology and knowledge-based sectors.

In early 2010, the Museum announced a series of programs, beginning with the Cade Prize for Innovation, a competition open to Florida-based innovators, as well as a weekend innovation club for youth, Camp Invention for underprivileged youth, and a commercialization workshop for innovators in tech companies. It also kicked off an annual donor campaign and recruited four additional community Board members.
