  • Mission:
  • The American River Conservancy is a non-profit organization that serves our community by protecting and enhancing natural habitats where biodiversity can flourish. Through education and recreation we promote an ethic of stewardship, assuring healthy ecosystems now and for future generations.

    Our organizational values guide the decisions we make daily and over the longer term. We believe:
    The protection of open space, biodiversity, and habitat is essential and enhances the beauty and livability of our community for both humans and wildlife;
    That people and the natural world are interdependent and that respect for, and celebration of, the natural world adds to the quality of life;
    In establishing ecological literacy among the youth and adults of our community;
    That people’s health and the community’s economic health are dependent on and interlinked with the health of the watershed;
    In operating with integrity, focusing on collaborative relationships among stakeholders, and honoring commitments to partners and volunteers; and
    In valuing and encouraging diversity in all aspects of our organization, community, and ecosystem.

  • History:
  • The American River Conservancy (ARC) is based in Coloma, CA and serves the western slope of El Dorado County in the central Sierra foothills of California. The American River Conservancy is the only local non-profit conservation organization that works with willing sellers to preserve and restore habitat in this region. ARC's conservation work focuses on protecting habitat in the Upper American River and Upper Cosumnes River watersheds of California. ARC was formed in 1989 by a group of concerned citizens intent on protecting local rivers and land. Since then, the Conservancy has preserved over 11,400 acres of important riparian, wetland, woodland and forest habitats through fee-title and conservation easement acquisition. Our stewardship program has successfully partnered with local, state and federal agencies to enhance and restore threatened and endangered species habitat and create sustainable hiking trails on local public lands. Conservation staff and volunteers monitor several conservation easements held by the Conservancy on an annual basis. Our environmental education programs are geared towards all ages and abilities. Our guided hikes, workshops, lectures, nature camps and school programs educate close to 6,000 people every year.
